Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) will host a conference titled Journalism in the Global South: Expanding Epistemological Frameworks on February 9 and 10, 2025. Organized by the Journalism and Strategic Communication program, the event will explore contemporary journalism research practices emerging from the Global South.
1. Who are the panelists?
Over two days, 18 leading journalism and media scholars will present their research, shaping discussions with their expertise. Among them are prominent voices in the field, representing diverse regions, expertise, and methodologies.
2. How diverse is the conference?
Scholars and journalism practitioners from 14 universities across nine countries will present at the conference. NU-Q faculty represents 22 percent of the panelists, and five out of six panels will feature a researcher from Qatar.
The conference also emphasizes gender balance, with women scholars making up 55 percent of panelists and 67 percent of discussants. One session, focused on feminist journalism and entrepreneurship, features an all-women panel.
3. What topics are the center of the discussions?
Panels will cover themes ranging from artificial intelligence to the development of self-media. Discussions will explore the future of journalism in the Global South in the context of technological advancements, ethical challenges, and emerging journalism practices.
