Art exhibition explores desert-inspired ‘unreal physical space’
The HBKU student center hosted “Projected Reality; In Transition,” an exhibition which displays the work of Leekyung Kang and Austin Aviles, whose art pieces go back and forth from real to unreal physical space, from Jan. 21 to 27.
Kang and Aviles are VCUarts Qatar’s artists in residence; they joined the painting and printmaking department’s fellowship program to engage in scholarly activity and research. The program allows artists to mentor university students in Qatar in addition to working on their own projects.
“Once I visited the desert, I found out that it is really unreal for me because it is exotic and I’ve never seen that kind of scenery before,” said Kang. She manipulated the photos she took in the desert by editing them in Photoshop, then by adding digital print and another layer of painting. “It looks like a painting, but it is not a real painting. It is both digital and non-digital mixed together. It is the confusion of photo and a non-photo,” she said. Here Leekyung Kang (left) is speaking to a student.
