NU-Q Views Policies
Preamble
We, the students of Northwestern University in Qatar, in our commitment to uphold journalistic integrity, foster a culture of critical thinking, and serve as a platform for student voices, do hereby establish NU-Q Views as the student-run media platform of the Journalism and Strategic Communication program at Northwestern University in Qatar. Compiled by students under journalism faculty mentorship, NU-Q Views is published regularly online and on social media. NU-Q Views serves as a laboratory for aspiring journalists and is owned and funded by Northwestern University in Qatar. This constitution governs our operations, responsibilities, and guiding principles as we serve the Education City community in Doha, Qatar.
Article I: Name
The name of this student publication shall be “NU-Q Views.”
Article II: Slogan
News for students. By students.
Article III: Purpose/Mission
Reflecting the mission of Northwestern University in Qatar and the Journalism and Strategic Communication program, NU-Q Views aims to:
1. Cultivate students’ journalistic skills in an experiential learning environment.
2. Provide students with a platform to showcase their work to a broader audience.
3. Uphold the vision of “News for students. By students” by committing to diversity, inclusion, and community-building within Northwestern University in Qatar and the broader Education City community.
Article IV: Membership and Leadership
Section 1: Membership Eligibility
Membership in NU-Q Views is open to all currently enrolled students at Northwestern University in Qatar who are interested in contributing to our student-run publication. To maintain a position on the staff, members must adhere to the Code of Ethics from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Academic Integrity Guidelines, and the Non-Discrimination Policies of Northwestern University and NU-Q.
Section 2: Staff and Leadership Eligibility
To hold a staff or leadership position within NU-Q Views, students must:
1. Be enrolled as a student at Northwestern University in Qatar.
2. Have no record of academic integrity violations or code of conduct infractions.
3. Not have been previously dismissed from the NU-Q Views board.
4. Senior student staff members, such as section heads and the Editor-in- Chief, must be sophomores or above.
Article V: Publication Responsibilities
Section 1: Editorial Board
NU-Q Views’ editorial board is responsible for overseeing all publication activities, editorial decisions, and adherence to journalistic standards, including managing staff, maintaining ethical guidelines, and ensuring compliance with Northwestern University in Qatar’s policies. NU-Q Views shall establish its operational guidelines, which include:
1. Name and identity of the publication
2. Mission and vision statements of the publication
3. Membership eligibility and requirements for staff members
4. Structure of the editorial board and roles of editorial staff
5. Powers, duties, and responsibilities of editorial and staff members
6. Procedures for the selection and appointment of editorial staff
7. Term limits and succession planning for editorial positions
8. Guidelines for meetings, including frequency, agenda-setting, and decision-making processes
9. Disciplinary measures for violations of editorial policies and code of conduct by staff members
AI Policy
AI Usage Policy for NU-Q Views
At NU-Q Views, we encourage the responsible, ethical, and transparent use of technology to enhance our work and provide high-quality content for our audience. As part of our commitment to transparency and ethical journalism, we have outlined the following policy regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in our editorial process.
Disclosure of AI Use:
If AI tools are used to assist with content creation, it must be clearly disclosed in the article or project. This includes using AI for generating ideas, drafting sections of text, or assisting with research. The specific AI tool(s) used should be named and the manner in which the tool was used (e.g., drafting, proofreading, or brainstorming) should be specified.
Ethical Use:
AI-generated content should not replace original reporting or storytelling. AI can be used to aid in writing or editing, but the final work must still reflect the publication’s standards for accuracy, creativity, and journalistic integrity. All facts and information generated by AI should be verified for accuracy.
Human Oversight:
Content generated by AI tools should always undergo human review. It is the responsibility of the editorial team to ensure that AI-generated text is clear, coherent, and aligned with NU-Q Views’ mission and editorial standards. The use of AI should enhance, not replace, human creativity and judgement.
Respect for Intellectual Property:
While using AI-generated content, ensure that any information used is properly attributed and does not infringe on intellectual property rights. AI-generated text should not be copied directly from copyrighted sources unless explicitly allowed.
